What are the California field sanitation rules?
California farms follow Cal/OSHA Title 8 §3457. The rule requires one toilet per 20 employees of each sex and one handwashing facility per 20 employees, within a quarter-mile walk or five minutes, whichever is shorter. Toilets must be clean, stocked with paper and serviced with records kept for two years.
| Field crew size | Toilets (per sex) | Handwashing facilities |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 doing hand labor | Transportation to facilities allowed instead | |
| 5–20 | 1 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 2 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 3 | 3 |
Exceptions apply for work under two hours including travel. Read the full rule at Title 8 §3457 on dir.ca.gov and confirm your setup with your safety advisor; this page is not legal advice.
How do field units reach vineyard blocks and pastures?
Field units reach vineyard blocks and pastures in two ways. Our truck places standard units at the nearest point with firm ground, or we deliver towable trailer-mounted units your crew pulls behind a pickup or ATV. Towable units are the easiest way to stay inside the quarter-mile rule as crews move down rows.
During harvest in Redwood Valley, Potter Valley and Anderson Valley, many growers add a mid-week service because crews double. Call two weeks before harvest starts to lock the schedule.

Farm and ranch questions
Do I need a hand-wash station for my field crew?
Cal/OSHA Title 8 §3457 requires one handwashing facility per 20 employees or fraction thereof, stocked with potable water, soap and single-use towels. A two-sink station covers a crew of up to 40.
How far from the crew can the toilet be?
Field toilets must be within a quarter-mile walk or five minutes, whichever is shorter. Where terrain makes that impossible, they go at the closest point vehicles can reach.
Can you move units between blocks during harvest?
We move units between vineyard blocks or pastures on a scheduled service day. Towable units let your own crew move them daily.
Do you keep service records?
Every service is logged with the date and unit. We email the log on request, which helps with the two-year recordkeeping Title 8 §3457 requires for field toilets.
